Metabolomic techniques determine the maximum number of metabolites in an organism at a given time. Traditionally used in biomedicine, they now are starting to be used in ecology. Researchers at the Global Ecology Unit CREAF-CSIC-UAB have studied the contributions of metabolomics to ecology to determine specific research lines in this field.
A group of researchers led by the Institute of Biotechnology and Biomedicine (IBB) and UAB have achieved to quantify with precision the effect of protein aggregation on cell aging processes using as models the Escherichia coli bacteria and the molecule which triggers Alzheimer's disease. Scientists demonstrated that the effect can be predicted before it occurs.
The UAB Food Technology Plant Special Research Centre (CERPTA) has designed a new system capable of sterilising and stabilising liquids at high pressure, thus allowing them to last longer at room temperature and reduce the use of additives. The technology also protects the bioactive components of foods.
Dark matter is the major component of Universe, but it is quite unknown. It does not emit or absorb light directly, but its particles, in collision, can be annihilated and produce gamma rays, which can be observed through a telescope. UAB researchers explain their search for dark matter using MAGIC, a European telescope located on the Canary island of La Palma.
