During the 2004/05 academic year the UAB launched three projects to restructure its faculties and schools so they can adapt more easily to the new European Higher Education Area:
1. The division of the Faculty of Science into the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Life Sciences. The Faculty of Science will teach Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, Chemistry, Geology and Environmental Sciences. The Faculty of Life Sciences will teach Biology, Biotechnology and Biochemistry. By restructuring in this way, the two faculties will be more specialised, the quality of teaching will be greater and our services to students will improve.
2. The creation of a new School of Engineering by merging the Graduate School of Engineering (ETSE) and the School of Computer Science. The new school will teach at the Sabadell and Bellaterra campuses and will be the backbone of all education in technologies at the UAB.
3. The merging of the Faculty of Economics and Business Studies and the Sabadell School of Business Studies to create the new Faculty of Business and Economics. At both the Bellaterra and Sabadell campus the Faculty will provide undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the various fields of business studies and economics, and will have research groups and structures established. By merging the two faculties we will improve and increase our visualisation of the academic and social potential of the Faculty for different sectors and the needs in economics and in businesses.
