According to the directives of the Ministry of Education and Science, university qualifications will follow the following structure:
a) A first cycle of 180 credits, lasting at least 3 years, with an unofficial diploma at the end. During this cycle, basic disciplinary academic training will be given, with all the compulsory content of the course.
b) To obtain the Spanish four-year graduate level (the equivalent of the current "licenciatura") an extra year with 60 additional credits must be taken and this must include a final year project or tutored work experience. These credits will provide training orientated towards improving employment prospects and consolidating the more independent and active role of students in their own training.
c) After completing this additional year, students may take a one-year or two-year postgraduate course to obtain a master's degree.
This structure aims to guarantee the relevance of the qualifications and make them compatible with the Framework for Qualifications of the EHEA.
