Environment

Over the past few years UAB has made a strong commitment to protecting the environment. The University has confirmed this commitment by implementing three strategies: environmental research, introducing the environment into course syllabuses and implementing projects as part of its environmental management. These have enabled activities to take place at our university that respect the principles of sustainability.

Our University now has a Sustainable Growth Action Plan which was drawn up as part of UAB's Agenda 21. This is why over the past few years we have been continuously working on steadily implementing the schemes set out in this Action Plan, enabling us to move forward according to the principles of sustainable growth.

Minimum Waste Project: Set up in 1995, this project began a process of establishing and defining waste collection circuits, environmental education campaigns and measures aimed at evaluating and reducing to a minimum the high quantity and variety of waste generated at UAB. The project is now fully up and running, and the activities are focused on good management and awareness-raising campaigns among the university community.

Cerdanyola-Campus waste collection centre: Opened in 1999, this facility serves the university community and the general public by providing the possibility to dispose of material that is not collected at their home in a correct, environmentally friendly way. The Cerdanyola-Campus waste collection centre is the only one of its kind to offer a Reusable Material Exchange Service, allowing any person, institution or association to request material from the centre for their own personal use. The centre is situated behind the Ciències Nord car park, next to the fire station. The opening hours are Monday to Friday, 9am to 1pm and 3:30pm to 5:30pm. You can also call the centre on 93 581 3397.

Laboratory waste management: UAB has been selectively collecting special waste produced by its laboratories since 1990. Today there are over 400 laboratories and they all collect their own waste and store it in four bunkers until it is collected by the authorised company.

Biodiesel and electric cars: Since 2002, UAB buses have been running on biodiesel produced from recycled frying oils. We also provide our staff with electric cars to use on campus.

Solar energy: In 2002 we began installing a solar energy plant on the roofs of the restaurant and the associations centre located at Plaça Cívica. This plant will become one of the largest of its kind in Europe. The maximum power generated will be 50.49 kW, and 62.089 kW of electricity will be produced per year.
