Validation of academic qualifications: This procedure enables a Spanish equivalent to be granted for your foreign qualifications. Applications should be made to the Ministry of Education and Science (Ministerio de Educación y Ciencia). This recognition will allow you to obtain your doctorate once you have finished your doctoral studies.
Authentication: This procedure allows your foreign documents to be officially validated. Authentication enables you to be admitted to a doctoral programme, but will be the same as if you used the validation procedure. Everyone must have their papers authenticated, but the procedure for doing so depends on your country of origin.
Students from countries where the directives of the Council of the European Union on recognition of qualifications apply: For documents issued in those countries, you will not need to have them authenticated, but you will have to get an official translation.Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland,France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, and United Kingdom. Switzerland is also included under a bilateral agreement with the EU.
Countries signatory to the 1961 Hague Convention: To authenticate papers from these countries, all that is required is the stamp of the relevant authorities in that country*. Andorra, Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Armenia, Australia, Austria, Bahamas, Barbados, Belarus, Belgium, Belize, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Botswana, Brunei Darussalam, Bulgaria, Colombia, Croatia, Cyprus, El Salvador, Estonia, Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, Fiji, Finland, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Lesotho, Liberia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Macao, Malawi, Malta, Marshall Islands, Mauritius, Mexico, Namibia, Netherlands, New Zealand, Niue, Norway, Panama, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Rumania, Russian Federation, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Samoa, San Marino, Seychelles, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Surinam, Swaziland, Switzerland, Tonga, Trinidad and Tobago, Turkey, United Kingdom, United States of America and Venezuela.
(*) For countries in this list that are also members of the European Union, the previous sub-paragraph applies.
Students from other countries: documents must be authenticated through diplomatic channels. The following authorities should be contacted:
1.The Ministry of Education in your country of origin, for academic degrees and certificates; and the applicable Ministry for birth certificates, identity cards and passports (proof of nationality).
2.Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the country where the documents were issued.
3.Spanish diplomatic or consular representation in your country of origin.
4. Documents issued by diplomatic or consular authorities in countries other than Spain must be authenticated by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs ( Ministerio de Asuntos Exteriores ).
